Once you log in, your dashboard looks something like this, except you will have just one tab with your class' username
.

edublog dashboard
Write:

edublog write tab

Here is where to go if you would like to
  • write a post
  • write a page
  • add a link to your blogroll.

The difference between a post and a page is the page will be static (stay in the same place at all time e.g. the 'About' page) but the posts move down when you have added a new one. The posts are shown in reverse chronological order as you add them.

Manage

edublog manage tab

In the manage tab you can:

edit a post that you have not yet published.
edit a page which you have not yet published.
add links to your blog roll.
edit your catergories - the key words that describe each post as a whole. They are the main tags.
edit your tags - the key words within a post. The tags are more specific than the categories.
media library - this is where any image, video you have uploaded is stored.
Import - here you move any posts that you have written in another blog host to edublogs
export - here you can move edublog posts to another blog host
forums - ? I am not sure what this is about. Maybe it's for posting queries.

Design

edublogs design tab

In themes you can select your blog's look.

Choose a theme that you like.

Add widgets to your sidebar or sidebars. The design you choose will have an impact on where the widgets are displayed. If you change your design and you no longer have a left sidebar, all the widgets that you allocated to that sidebar will no longer show up unless you first remove them from your old design and add then them to the correct sidebar in the new design.

If you would like to add an image to your header that you have designed yourself, you may upload it here.

Comments

blog_comments tab

The comments tab allows you to manage comments by approving, deleting, or unapproving comments.
As a teacher, you may want to set the comments to be moderated by you.
That means, when a reader posts a comment, it will not appear on the blog straight away. An email is sent to you telling you that there is a comment awaiting your moderation.

edublog comment tab

You can approve the comment in this tab after you read it.

You may also mark a comment as spam or unapprove one that you had previously approved.

edublog comment tab3

Akismet Spam is an application that you join elsewhere and add it to edublogs. It collects comments which are spam so you don't have to deal with them.
Click the link to 'plugins' on the right side of the dashboard to activate Akismet. Read the information below under the Plugins for a brief explanation of how to activate Akismet.

Upgrades Tab

edublogs upgrade tab

This area is one I have not yet used. It appears to be a way to add more features to your blog.

divider pawprintdivider pawprintdivider pawprintdivider pawprint

There are more settings to the right of your dashboard under the 'log out' link.

Settings : -

edublogs settings-general

General

These are the settings in the general tab:

your blog title
tagline - this is the description that shows up under your title
email address
membership - check the box if you only want registered edublog readers to comment on the blog. I do not have this checked because a lot of
students and teachers do not use edublogs as their blog host and your blog will miss comments from these people.
timezone
date format
time format
week starts on - choose the day of the week which you want to make the first

click save changes

Settings - Writing

Here you can make the text (when you are writing a post) box larger so you have more room to read your post. You can also give a default name to categories and links.

Settings - Reading

Here you can set what your blog's front page displays eg a static page or a posts page. Usually the front page shows the latest post at the top.
You can also set the number of posts shown on the front page.

For each article on the front page, you can select to show it in full or as a summary. It is best to show the whole post as readers are unlikley to click the "read more" link to get to another page.

Settings - Discussion

edublogs settings-discussion

Try to set these settings so it is easy for readers to leave a comment.

Most students do not have email addresses so I have unchecked this setting.

I prefer to receive email notification when a comment has been posted in order to check that it is authentic before approving it. Safer for the students this way.

Settings - Privacy

edublogs_settings_privacy

It is on the interim DET blog policy that student blogs be private. That means people can see it but it cannot be searched. Therefore it is best to select the second option.

Settings - Miscellaneous
I have not used this feature . It lets you set the size of default images.

Settings - delete blog

This allows you to delete your blog.

Settings - Blog Avatar

An avatar is a pictorial representation of yourself. There are many websites on which you may create an avatar in your likeness or you may want to upload a photo or any other picture. My students selected pictures of children from Microsoft's clipart site as these are not copyrighted.

I have used a photo of myself so that parents watching their students add posts know that our blog is, in fact, authentic.

Your blog avatar is the image shown at the front of your blog page. It is not the image that will appear when you post comments on another class' or person's blog. There is a separate image to upload for edublogs to use as your comment avatar.

Settings - Blog Type

Select whether the blog is a teacher blog or a student blog. If it is a class blog, select 'student'. If it is for you to post your own reflections select 'teacher'.

Plugins

Here you may activate any plug-in that you would like. Plugins add more features to the blog for you and your readers' benefit.

edublogs_plugins

As can be seen I have activated
  • "add this Social bookmarking" so readers can quickly and easily add me to their online bookmarking site.
  • 'Akismet' - once you click to activate Akismet, you will be given instructions to join the Akismet website, where you will be given a wordpress API Key, and further instructions on how to embed the widget onto your blog's sidebar. As stated before, the Akismet functions as a collector of spam comments.

Plugins - Akismet Configuration

edublogs_plugins_akismet configuration

Here is where you will paste your Akismet API Key once you join Akismet's website.

Users

edublogs_users

Authors and Users

Here you will see a list of all users on your blog. You may also change the role of each user here if you are the administrator of the blog.

Your Profile

Make sure the Visual Editor is checked as it gives you more features when writing a post.

This page lets you add information such as: your name, email address, a short bio and password changes.

Your Avatar

Here you upload your "user" avatar. It will appear whenever you leave comments on other blogs, post in the forums and when your popular posts are displayed around the site.

Add Users

This section lets you add your students as users and lets you add the students' role within the blog. They will need an email address to join but you can easily create dummy emails for them and join for those students who have permission to post on the internet.

Here is how I have joined students onto the blog.

Give them a username e.g. classname theirfirstname (or even a nickname) --> 3gkjenny
then I use my class's Google gmail email address to add each student as a number.

e.g.

if my class's email address is: classname@gmail.com

then, my first student will be

classname+1@gmail.com

the second student would be

classname+2@gmail.com

I keep a list of which student is +1, +2

I receive these emails because the class email is my account.

Students as users allows them to post blog posts as themselves instead of the teacher. They appear as the author of the post. Giving them a comment avatar makes their image appear on other students blogs.

Invites

Here is a way to send an email to your friends to sign-up at edublogs.

Blog and User creator

This is where you can create more blogs for your students so they each have their own.

Add the users in the same way as described above in the 'Add Users' section.
